14TH RED BULL OPEN FINAL RESULTS

Beijing, CHINA C January 17th, 2016 C Unfortunately as is sometimes the case, high wind levels and a fresh coat of snow left the Mellow Park at Nanshan Ski Resort in unridable conditions for contest riding. After running the morning¨s first run to gauge the setup¨s capability, multiple discussions between riders, organizers and judges ultimately led to the decision to cancel the finals, split the prize money and take the previous day¨s qualification results, meaning Ludvig¨s first place seeding run put him in first. His qualification and therefore winning run consisted of a cab 900, front 10, frontside shifty 360 bonk on the lantern, finished with a fs 180 to cab 360 out on the downrail.

That didn¨t mean spectators weren¨t treated to some eye-candy riding on Sunday! The Big Air was still held on the smaller kicker in the late afternoon, and with the decision to judge based on style this meant some seriously tweaked methods, shifties and slow-floating spins were on deck. One of the last hits of the session by Norway¨s Fritjof Tischendorf however earned the unanimous decision from judges and riders alike C a slow, floating backflip stalling at a late, tweaked out method showcasing to the locals what snowboarding is all about!

14th Red Bull Open National Qualifier Results

Beijing, CHINA (January 9th, 2016) C
With next weekend¨s WSTw International Level 14th Red Bull Open invited rider field narrowed down from previous years to just 16, wild card spots were in hot demand! The National Qualifier this year therefore saw Nanshan Open veterans and event super-fans Ian Thorley and Sam Hulbert travel to China early for a shot at qualifying for their favourite event locally, and their efforts paid off! The American¨s qualified first and second respectively, Ian topping the podium with a cab900, bs720, bs180 lantern bonk, and cab270 on the downrail, and Sam with a fs720 to bs720, fs180 lantern bonk and cab270 on the downrail, C shattering the locals dreams of qualifying and any chance at the prize money. Just joking! The local wildcard list was conveniently increased by two spots this year, still allowing for five Chinese riders and one Ukraine rider to move through. `Tiger¨ He Wei was the top ranked Chinese rider in third place, riding strong throughout the day and will be one to watch next weekend.

The field of over 50 riders were blessed with rare blue skies and perfect weather in the Beijing area, riding a course featuring two jumps, a lantern bonk and down-rail options. ^I came to China for two reasons - Tube Station pizza, and the Nanshan Open C hands down the best event of the season ̄ Ian said. The mainly local crowd was excited to see Chinese snowboarding legend Wang Lei came out of retirement, competing just for fun and still ending up in fourth place!

With the 14th Red Bull Open riders list now complete, the country eagerly awaits the arrival of all the international pros on Tuesday!

The Red Bull Open Returns for 14th Edition!

The Red Bull Open continues its hot streak as one of the most talked about contests on the tour as it enters its 14th year. With Beijing hosting the Winter Olympics in 2022, snowboarding is rapidly gaining a huge fan base in China and the Red Bull Open is where a lot of locals get their first taste of the sport in person.

There¨s little wonder why many riders request to come back to this event C the Red Bull Open provides a perfect blend of contest riding, local hospitality, and cultural immersion, of course `mixed¨ in with some serious party-time. For once it¨s not about the triple corks and spin-to-wins, but for riders to experience the local culture and represent snowboarding as a fun, accessible sport to the local spectators.

The local Mellowparks.cn park and event crew put together one of Asia¨s top slopestyle terrain parks, combining a perfectly shaped double kicker line with creative jib features, all located in the Nanshan Mellow Park just outside of Beijing. As a true `by-riders-for-riders¨ event, the organizers are no desk-jockeys, seen testing the kickers themselves on training day and welcoming the visiting pros with large family-style dinners. It¨s clear this team shares a strong passion, surrounding the event with a truly friendly and enjoyable atmosphere!

Preceding the main competition is the World Snowboard Tour National Level event 14th Red Bull Open National Qualifier on January 9th. As the largest event of the year in the region, the qualifier and Open offers locals an opportunity to get World Snowboard Tour Ranking points on the board, and with the top riders progressing through to the International Level event it also allows them to compete alongside bigger-name pros for even more points and prize money C an honor often met with both excitement and nervousness!

Schedule for the Red Bull Open 2016

Saturday, January 9th 2016 C National Qualifier
Friday, January 15th 2016 C Open Training
Saturday, January 16th 2016 C Seeding event
Sunday, January 17th 2016 C Head-to-Head and Red Bull Big Air Battle

A little history´

It began over a decade ago as the `Nanshan Open¨, when a small group of friends threw the first snowboard competition ever held on Chinese soil with just a handful of riders and a case of beer as the top prize. As the contest has evolved and grew the following years, it earned global recognition in 2007 as a 3Star stop on the World Snowboard Tour. The Nanshan Open has `leveled up¨ since then to International Level status, and is now the largest slopestyle competition in Asia on the World Snowboard Tour.

The event has hosted a who¨s-who of up-and-coming riders, including numerous Olympians, Transworld¨s `Rookie of the Year¨ Austin Smith, female superstars Hana Beaman and Leanne Pelosi, along with the Isenseven, Nitro RoadWarriors and Pirate Movie Productions film crews. Past winners of the event include Mons Roisland (2015), Mathias Weissenbacher (2014), Jeremy Thompson (2013), Juuso Laivisto (2012 and 2010), Janne Korpi (2011) Freddy Austbo (2009), Jakob Wilhelmson (2008) and Hampus Mosesson (2007), with a `guest judge¨ line-up equally impressive including Travis Parker, Michi Albin, Ingemar Backman and Scotty Wittlake.

2016 will be the Open¨s 10th year with Red Bull as the title sponsor C this long-term partnership has allowed both organizer and sponsor alike to focus on improving the event and raise the bar year after year. The Red Bull Open has undoubtedly put China on the snowboarding map, and anticipation is high for number 14!

What the riders say´

^The Nanshan Open in China was amazing. From the moment we arrived in Beijing we
were taken care of so well. Amazing dinners every night, nice hotels and we got to do lots of touristy stuff´ The comp was fun too, definitely one of my better snowboarding experiences ̄ C Nick Brown, 2010

^It was for me the best competition of the season, really good time C whole week, good crowd, crazy parties´ and I won! ̄ C Mathias Weissenbacher, 2014

^Absolute best time ever! I hope I can come to this competition every year for the rest of my life´ ̄ C Ian Thorley, 2013, 2014

^Going to China was awesome. I broke my nose, split it open, jacked my ankle up, but I had a great time. It was a super rad experience. ̄ C Hana Beaman, 2013
