Juuso Laivisto Takes First for the Second Time at the 5Star 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open!

¡¡

Beijing, CHINA - January 15th, 2012 - In his third appearance at the event, Finnish rider Juuso Laivisto today claimed his second first-place finish at China's TTR 5Star 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open. "It's been awesome to see how the event has grown the last few years, and to see such legends in the judging booth made it extra special to win here today!" Juuso said as he celebrated his win.

With the aforementioned judges including Michi Albin, Ingemar Bachman and Scotty Wittlake in charge of narrowing yesterday's 12 top-ranked riders down to four for the afternoon's Super Finals, the level of riding was significantly elevated from the qualification round as riders gave their all for promises of fame, glory and of course TTR points and prize money! After two runs each, USA's Sam Hulbert would enter the Super Finals ranked first, followed by Juuso Laivisto, Roope Tonteri (FIN) and Teddy Koo (KOR).

Juuso Laivisto clinched first place on his second run, going huge with back-to-back bs900 mutes, followed by a 50-50 to method on the polejam, bs lipslide on the downrail finishing off in style with a tweaked out fs360 nosebonk on the Red Bull cube. Roope Tonteri (FIN) unfortunately was unable to stomp what could have been a first place run, landing a cab900 indy but reverting out on his impressive bs1260 mute attempt - still finishing his run off in style with a switch boardslide 270out on the polejam and a lipslide 270out on the downrail, enough for third place. Sam Hulbert took second with a bs720 to fs1080 on the kickers and was the only rider to hit the jib section's oversized-pipe with a 50-50 to bs360 out.

With the snowboarding side of the trip now over, riders will now be focusing on getting their voices in tune for tonight's KTV-party session and once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Great Wall - Zaijian and Ganbei!

Day 1 Comes to a Close as 12 Finalists Announced

¡¡

Beijing, CHINA - January 14th, 2012 - This Saturday saw 26 riders from 12 different countries storm Beijing's Nike Nanshan Park as the Red Bull Nanshan Open celebrated a decade as China's largest and longest running slopestyle contest. 400,000 viewers tuned in to the live online broadcast to watch Finnish rider and current TTR Slopestyle points leader Roope Tonteri reign supreme, qualifying first going into tomorrow's finals.

Windy conditions during the morning runs subsided for a calm and sunny afternoon session as riders attacked the fresh park setup, consisting of a huge double kicker line followed by range of creative options in the lower section that allowed riders to choose a range of options to suit their style.

Roope Tonteri's first-place run consisted of a huge bs720 on the first kicker followed by a jaw-dropping double rodeo 900 on the second. A boardslide up the polejam, boardslide 270out on the downrail and cab360 over the wallride secured his spot at the top of the table. Canadian rider Maxence Parrot placed second with a bs720 over the large kicker, indy backflip on the second, a 50-50 to 180out on the jumbo-pipe and finishing off in style with a cab180 nosepick to 270 transfer over the wallride. Knut Eliassen took time off from his day job as Nitro team manager to qualify third with a cab900 to bs720 double grab on the kicker section before getting inventive with a handplant up the spine, nose-pressing the downrail and handplanting the wallride.

Despite no Chinese riders scoring high enough to make it through to day two, the local contingent still showed they have game with Zhang Wei's run including a fs720 to bs360 on the kickers and Andrew Wang stomping a cab540 to fs360, followed by stylish bluntslide to 270out on the downrail.

With all eyes now focused on the twelve qualified riders, we'll be hoping for no wind and perfect riding conditions for tomorrow's finals. Those that want to stay up to date with tomorrow's action by can check the live CCTV5 coverage or tune in to the live stream with the details below:

10th Red Bull Nanshan Open National Qualifier Results

¡¡

¡¡

Beijing, CHINA (January 7th, 2012) ¨C As Beijing was hit by a similar snow-storm that¡¯s rocking Europe, China¡¯s top snowboarders still came through to the Nike Nanshan Park for the 2Star 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open National Qualifier. A 2Star TTR slopestyle event, the qualifier determined which locally based riders can compete in the 5Star 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open with the international pros next weekend.

With only the best run out of three counting, riders were judged on three sections ¨C two kicker options and a jib selection to finish. Fresh from a solid season in New Zealand, it was Andrew Wang who took first-place honors based on his highest-scoring first run of the day. Dropping in switch, a smooth cab540 on the first kicker followed by a late bs360 on the second kicker impressed the crowd, while a flawless jib section consisting of a boardslide-270 off on the raised pipe and a 50-50-fs360 off on the rail earned top points from the judges while putting an extra US$1,000 into Andrew¡¯s pocket!

American rider Nate Jones wasn¡¯t far behind, improving throughout the day with his highest-scoring final run of a cab720, a tweaked out switch-bs180 japan on the kickers, while a fs180 bonk on the barrel and a switch fs5050-270off on the wallride put him in second place with $600 prize money. Parkshaper Liuli finished third in his homepark with a big fs540 and switch bs180 on the kickers, while Zhang Wei took fourth with a fs720 over the first kicker and bs180 on the second. The winner of last year¡¯s qualifier Xiao Guo also earned his spot in next weekend¡¯s big event with a huge fs360 and a corked bs540 on the kicker line. Andrew, Nate and Liuli¡¯s winnings were complimented by a limited edition Nanshan Open watch courtesy of Nixon.

With the 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open riders list now complete, riders will be spending the next week practicing hard as the international pros arrive for the January 14th and 15th 5Star 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open event.

Nanshan Open Celebrates a Decade of Snowboarding in China!

Beijing, CHINA (November 10, 2011)

After a decade of driving the Chinese snowboard scene, the Nanshan Open celebrates its 10th birthday in style this January 14th & 15th by gaining 5-star TTR status to become the largest slopestyle snowboard competition in Asia.

The Nanshan Open earns its reputation as one of the most enjoyable contest trips on the TTR World Tour by providing a perfect blend of contest riding, cultural immersion and local hospitality. The local Mellowparks.cn park and event crew step it up each year to build one of Asia¡¯s top slopestyle terrain parks - mixing huge, perfectly shaped jumps with creative and challenging jib features in the Nike Nanshan Park. A true ¡®for-riders-by-riders¡¯ event, organizers Steve Zdarsky and Marco Huang can be seen testing the huge kickers themselves on training day, while the rest of their crew always find time to ride and hang with the competitors post-event. It¡¯s clear that the crew shares a strong passion towards the sport - surrounding the event with a truly friendly and laid-back atmosphere, somewhat rare in today¡¯s competitions!

As top snowboarders from all corners of the globe converge on Chinese soil for a shot at the prize, 2012 promises to be the year the 10th Red Bull Nanshan Open reaches new heights for Chinese snowboarding!

From humble beginnings...

The Nanshan Open began in 2002 when a small group of friends threw the first snowboard competition ever held on Chinese soil. As the contest gained momentum and popularity the following years, in 2007 it earned global recognition as a 3Star stop on the TTR World Tour. The Nanshan Open ¡®leveled up¡¯ to 4Star status the subsequent year and in 2010 was the largest Asian event on the TTR World Tour.

Now a 5Star event, the two-day competition offers up US$50,000 in prize money and is preceded by a 2Star local qualifier on January 7th that will earn six Chinese riders a chance to compete in the Open alongside their international idols!

The event has hosted a who¡¯s-who of up and coming riders, including Transworld¡¯s ¡®Rookie of the Year¡¯ Austin Smith, young stars Nils Arvidsson and Anton Bilare along with the Isenseven, Nitro RoadWarriors and Pirate Movie Productions film crews. Past winners of the event include Juuso Laivisto (2010), Freddy Austbo (2009), Jakob Wilhelmson (2008) and Hampus Mosesson (2007), while everyone¡¯s favorite OG shredder Travis Parker came on as guest judge for 2011. Last year saw local young-gun He Wei make a name for himself, placing 8th in the highest finish to date for a Chinese rider in a TTR competition.

2012 will be the Open¡¯s sixth year with Red Bull as the title sponsor ¨C this long term partnership has allowed both organizer and sponsor alike to focus on improving their event and raise the bar year after year. The Red Bull Nanshan Open has undoubtedly put China on the snowboarding map, and anticipation is high on what 2012 holds for the event!
